MIDI Troubleshooting

What is MIDI

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It sends information about what you play, like which key you press, how hard, and when. It does not send sound. This is different from audio, which is the actual sound you hear. Because of this, audio cables or audio outputs will not work as MIDI. MIDI is a standard that many devices and apps can use to communicate with each other.

In CoyoteMIDI, the devices that can send MIDI to the app, or receive MIDI from the app, are listed in the MIDI settings as input devices and output devices.

Common Issues

No devices found

When CoyoteMIDI can’t find any MIDI devices on your system, and the input devices list is empty in the MIDI settings, it usually means no MIDI device is connected, turned on, or recognized by your computer. Check your cables, USB connection, and device setup. Double check your device’s manual for MIDI compatibility.

No devices selected

Your computer can see MIDI devices, but none are selected in CoyoteMIDI. Open the MIDI settings in the app and select the devices you want to use as input devices.

Device failed to connect

CoyoteMIDI found your device but could not connect to it. On Windows, this often happens when another app is already using the device. You will have to unselect it in any other application, and then select it as the input device in CoyoteMIDI. You can still route the same MIDI data to the other applications by using a virtual MIDI device and select that as the output in CoyoteMIDI, and the input of your other applications. Read more about this setup here.

It’s also possible that this issue is caused by driver problems or other system issues. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your device, and have any software recommended by the device manufacturer installed.

No input detected

Everything seems set up correctly, but no MIDI data is coming in. This usually means the device is not sending any signals or is set up incorrectly. Consult your device’s manual to ensure it is configured properly to send MIDI out.
